WYSIWIG Content Options

How to use

WYSIWYG areas across many content types use the TinyMCE editor. Find out more about using TinyMCE in the Terminalfour documentation.

Copy and Paste

When pasting content from another web page or document (e.g. a Word document or PDF), it is recommended to use the "Paste as text" option to avoid importing unwanted formatting. This ensures that only clean text is inserted, without hidden styles or markup that could conflict with the site's design.

Formatting tips

  • Use heading levels in order (H2, H3, H4) — do not skip levels
  • Avoid using bold or font size changes as a substitute for headings
  • Use bullet or numbered lists for sets of related items
  • Keep paragraphs concise and scannable

Content options

The following content formatting options are typically available in WYSIWYG elements:

Typography

Headings (H2–H6), paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, subscript, superscript, and blockquotes.

Lists

Unordered (bullet) lists and ordered (numbered) lists. Lists can be nested by indenting.

Tables

Tables can be added and edited directly in the WYSIWYG editor. Use tables for structured data only — not for layout purposes. Keep tables simple and ensure they include header rows for accessibility.

Images

Images are inserted from the Media Library using the "Insert from Media" toolbar icon. Select an image and if needed, choose a layout — the default layout displays the image full-width.

Alternative Layouts

The following layouts can be chosen by clicking 'Select with Layout' and will output images with a different format.

  • Wits 2026 Image Floating Left

  • Wits 2026 Image Floating Right

  • Wits 2026 Image Center

  • Wits 2026 Image Fullwidth

Links

Three types of links are available:

  • Internal links — link to another section or content item within the site
  • External links — link to an external URL (opens in a new tab by default)
  • Media links — link to a document in the Media Library (e.g. PDF, Word file)

Buttons

Button styles can be applied to links using custom formats in the toolbar: Format > Formats > Custom Formats. Select the link text first, then apply the 'btn' style.

Button Example

Blockquotes

To highlight a quotation or key paragraph, select the text and apply the blockquote format: Format > Formats > Blocks > Blockquote.

Important notes

  • Not all content types support all formatting options — refer to the individual content type guidance for specifics
  • Some elements have character limits — check the element description for maximum sizes
  • Avoid excessive formatting — simpler content is easier to maintain and performs better across devices

Examples of Content Options

Universities South Africa (USAf), an umbrella body representative of the country’s 26 public universities, has selected two case studies from Wits University to demonstrate the societal impact of the academic work conducted at the institution. Following an open call to all South African universities in August, USAf selected the Biomimicry to democratize access to infectious disease diagnostics case study, submitted by Professor Bavesh Kana, and Drama for Life’s Knowledge Unzipped sexual and reproductive health and rights project, submitted by Mr Hamish Mabala Neill.

USAf selected six case studies for the Humanities and Social Sciences category, including Wits’ Drama for Life Knowledge Unzipped project. Knowledge Unzipped is a multi-modal, applied theatre-based sexual and reproductive health and rights project. Run by Drama for Life in partnership with the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, it provides updated strategies for implementing, training and assessing applied arts in public health.

Outcomes were achieved within each grouping that aligned with the objective to address specific Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Education (SRHR) needs ‘rooted in the local context and culture’.

An applied theatre practitioner, Mr Hamish Mabala Neill is the Knowledge Unzipped project lead and the Creative Hub Research Director at Drama for Life. He holds a Master’s in Applied Theatre from Wits, awarded for his performance-as-research dissertation which interrogated ‘race’ through performance.

Drama for Life is a unique, internationally recognised postgraduate programme in the Wits School of Arts dedicated to arts for social transformation and healing. Drama for life brings together the disciplines of Applied Drama and Theatre, Performance Ethnography, Performance as Research, Arts Education, Drama Therapy and Expressive Arts Therapies within the context of a critical reflexive praxis.
