African Art

The Wits Art Museum (WAM) houses one of the world’s finest collections of African art and is a rich resource for research and teaching.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Wits research in artificial intelligence and machine learning focuses on using large data sets and advanced neural network algorithms to drive innovation and discovery.

Astronomy and Cosmology

Using the Square Kilometre Array, alongside MeerKAT and the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory, Wits scientists are well placed to explore the origins of the Universe and the outer reaches of our solar system.

This multidisciplinary field explores urban form and its impact on transport and services, informal settlements and livelihoods, employment patterns, changing suburban identities, inner city renewal, and security.

Communicable Diseases

HIV and TB remain major health challenges in South Africa and are the focus of sustained research into their causes, transmission, and control, alongside significant advances in vaccines for pneumococcal diseases, particularly for children.
